The President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, accompanied by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Abdulla Aripov, visited the Amir Temur Mausoleum and Registan Complex in Samarkand.
The tour of the monuments was accompanied by a story about the activities of Sahibkiran Amir Timur in creating a strong centralized state and about the friendly relations he established with the rulers of European countries at that time. The guests were also informed about the large-scale landscaping activities carried out in Samarkand, as well as the historical buildings and structures that have survived to this day.
The guests were impressed by the Registan Ensemble, which was founded in the 15th century by the great ruler Mirzo Ulugbek and subsequently developed into a single complex, including the Sherdor and Tillaqori madrasahs, erected by order of the ruler of Samarkand, Bahadur Yalangtush, in the 17th century.
António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen stressed that Uzbekistan, as one of the cradles of ancient civilization, played a significant role in the development of humanity and highly appreciated the work carried out by the current generation to preserve historical-cultural monuments, which are the result of the unique intelligence and creative potential of the great ancestors.
During the sightseeing, the high-ranking guests also spoke with tourists from Europe who had visited Samarkand, listened to their opinions about the ancient city, and took photos together.
