On October 5-7, the Central Asian Radiation Oncology Congress on “Modern achievements of radiation therapy and its prospects in Central Asia” was held in Layner Mountain Resort Complex, in Tashkent region.

Oncologists and radiologists from Uzbekistan, Germany, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan were invited to the congress organized by Uventa Plus together with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan, OPASCA German Oncology Solutions company of Germany and other organizations.

Activities on prevention and treatment of oncological diseases were summed up at the event, the medical equipment level and modern prospects of radiation therapy not only in Uzbekistan, but also in Central Asian countries was discussed.

As noted, the Central Asian countries are lagging behind international standards in the effective use of radiation therapy in treatment of cancer, provision with the latest medical equipment, services and the effectiveness of procedures in this area. In Central Asia with a population of over 70 million people, there are only 15 modern linear accelerators. Today, one such equipment accounts for 5 million citizens. Meanwhile, according to WHO standards, one such installation of a linear accelerator is designed for 250 thousand people. Today in Kazakhstan there are 13 units of such equipment, in Uzbekistan – 2, and in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan there is no such equipment for radiation therapy. The issue of training personnel for working on such equipment remains also in the region.

Reports on achievements, skills and experience in the field were presented by oncologists, physicists-radiologists from leading medical institutions of Germany and Russia.

At the press conference, organized following the congress, it was noted that an agreement was reached on development of oncological medicine in Central Asian countries at the level of international requirements, introduction of foreign experience, strengthening cooperation, organization of workshops in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan based on the ideas forwarded during the congress, supporting the project on organizing a German oncology center in Uzbekistan, particularly in Tashkent region, holding the next Central Asian Congress in Uzbekistan.
