From March 17 to July 1, the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku will host the exhibition “Heritage in Stitches: Journey through Embroidery and Sewing Traditions of Uzbekistan”, dedicated to the cultural-historical heritage and folk costume of the country from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries.
The exhibition will feature more than 148 objects of decorative and applied art from the country’s museum collection, including gold-embroidered chapans, a key element of men’s national costume, samples of suzane, and jewelry by ancient artisans from different regions of the country.
The exhibition reflects the revival of handicraft skills from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, an integral part of Uzbekistan’s identity.
As part of the cultural program for the exhibition’s opening on March 16-17, the ballet performance “Lazgi: The Dance of Soul and Love” will be presented for the first time on the stage of the Azerbaijan State Academic Musical Theater.
The spectacular performance by the famous German choreographer Raul Raimondo Rebeck is dedicated to the ancient folk dance lazgi, which UNESCO included in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The history of Khorezm dance, which embodies folk wisdom and is shrouded in many mysteries and riddles, dates back three thousand years. Exciting energy, incendiary movements, and a unique style based on a complex drawing make lazgi an outstanding cultural phenomenon.
The performance of the National Ballet of Uzbekistan was first presented to the public in 2021 and immediately became a sensation.
The exhibition and cultural program are organized with the support of the Art and Culture Development Foundation of Uzbekistan.
