The Minister of Justice of Uzbekistan, Akbar Toshqulov, and the Ambassador of Switzerland to Uzbekistan, Konstantin Obolensky, signed an Agreement on the Redistribution of Confiscated Assets in Tashkent.
Under this agreement, Uzbekistan will receive a return of approximately $182 million. Certain Uzbekistan citizens unlawfully acquired these funds, which were entirely confiscated in 2012 as part of a criminal case initiated by the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland against G. Karimova. The funds will be returned through the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund – Uzbekistan Vision 2030 Fund.
In 2022, an agreement was signed in Bern between the two countries on the return of confiscated illegally acquired assets for the benefit of Uzbekistan’s population. This agreement establishes the mechanism, key principles, and objectives for returning illicitly acquired assets to Uzbekistan through the Uzbekistan Vision 2030 Trust Fund.
Under the agreement, $131 million will be returned to Uzbekistan. With the signing of this new document, the total amount of recovered funds will reach $313 million.
The funds, returned through the Uzbekistan Vision 2030 Fund, will be allocated to implementing socially significant projects in the healthcare and education sectors.
Information about the fund and its projects is available in both Uzbek and English on its official website.
