A new GIS laboratory opens in Bukhara

The opening ceremony of a new Laboratory for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) equipped with the most modern computers, a server, a data center, and a plotter was held at the Bukhara Institute of Natural Resource Management at the National Research University “Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers”.

The laboratory was established with the support of FAO as part of the regional project “Integrated Natural Resources Management in Drought-prone and Salt-affected Agricultural Production Landscapes in Central Asia and Türkiye.”

FAO staff made presentations at the event on the goals and objectives and the importance of the new GIS laboratory, talked about the principles of its work, and familiarized the Institute’s researchers and other specialists with its capabilities.

The Bukhara Institute of Natural Resources Management was established in 2004. The primary purpose of the educational institution is to train qualified personnel in studying and rational use of Uzbekistan’s natural resources. The new GIS laboratory will be used for scientific, practical, educational, and research purposes. Representatives of the Institute expressed gratitude to FAO for creating the facility, which opens up great opportunities for their activities.
