Javokhir Sindarov defeats five-time world champion for the second time at tournament in India
At the ongoing Tech Mahindra Global Chess League team tournament in Bengaluru, India, Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov has defeated former world champion Viswanathan Anand twice.
On the tournament’s opening day, Javokhir defeated Anand with the white pieces. In their most recent game, which finished yesterday, he defeated him again, this time playing with the black pieces.
In the recent tournament round with a $1 million prize fund, Sindarov’s FYERS American Gambits played against the CheQ Mumba Masters, led by France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. Sindarov drew with Vachier-Lagrave on the top board, while Bibisara Assaubayeva and Marc’Andria Maurizzi also drew their matches against India’s Harika Dronavalli and Bardiya Daneshvar, respectively. Nihal Sarin defeated Pranesh 3-0. However, Daniil Dubov and Sara Khadem lost their games 0-4, giving Vachier-Lagrave’s team an 11-6 win.
Sindarov’s team beat the PBG Alaskan Knights, led by five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, with a score of 12-9.
Following these results, FYERS American Gambits took the lead with nine points, winning on tiebreak criteria.
Alpine APL Pipers, led by Magnus Carlsen, Anand’s CheQ Mumba Masters, and Ganges Grandmasters, led by Ian Nepomniachtchi, also have nine points and are close behind Sindarov’s team.
Today, FYERS American Gambits will face Triveni Continental Kings in the tournament’s next round. In this match, Javokhir Sindarov will take on Alireza Firouzja.
In the initial encounter between the teams, Sindarov played to a draw against Firouzja, and his team won 14:5.
