How many higher education institutions are there in Uzbekistan?
As of the beginning of the 2025/2026 academic year, 215 higher education institutions, including branches, were operating in the country.
According to the National Statistics Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan, there are 97 non-state higher education institutions, and the participation of the non-state sector is increasing.
The number of higher education institutions by region is as follows:
98 in Tashkent, 19 and 14 in Tashkent and Samarkand regions, respectively, 11 in Karakalpakstan, 11 in Bukhara region, nine each in Andijan, Kashkadarya and Fergana regions, eight each in Surkhandarya and Khorezm regions, six in Namangan region, five each in Jizzakh and Navoi regions, and three in Syrdarya region.
Almost half of higher education institutions are located in the capital. Tashkent retains its status as the country’s main educational center.
