Why is an environmental audit important?
Today, protecting the environment, using natural resources responsibly, and ensuring environmental safety are key strategic priorities.
Global challenges, including water scarcity, air pollution, and rising waste volumes, make regular, objective assessments of the environmental impact of economic activity essential. In this context, environmental auditing is becoming increasingly important.
The system established by the Law “On Environmental Audit” enables independent assessments of whether production and other processes meet regulatory requirements and environmental standards. It also supports the adoption of green technologies and the development of environmental management systems at enterprises. Adopted in 2021, the law sets out procedures for conducting environmental audits and regulates auditing organizations.
An environmental audit is an independent review of a business entity’s compliance with environmental requirements. It systematically examines the enterprise’s activities against environmental protection standards. Auditors assess, in particular, emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere, the condition and treatment of wastewater, procedures for storing and disposing of waste, the use of land and water resources, and the availability of required environmental permits.
Such monitoring helps determine an enterprise’s current environmental status, identify potential risks, and take timely action to address violations.
If an audit identifies shortcomings in waste accounting or treatment facility operations, or finds that emission limits have been exceeded, auditors recommend corrective action. These recommendations help prevent environmental damage at industrial facilities.
Specialized environmental auditing organizations conduct audits under contract. Audits are mandatory and conducted annually for enterprises with a high or medium environmental impact. Business entities with a minor or localized environmental impact may undergo audits voluntarily.
As an effective form of environmental oversight, environmental auditing plays a key role in preventing violations in the use of natural resources and in environmental protection.
