The UN General Assembly passes a resolution initiated by Uzbekistan
The United Nations General Assembly approved the resolution titled “Enhancing the role of parliaments in accelerating social development”, which was presented at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The document was co-sponsored by 61 UN member states from all regions, showcasing widespread international support for Uzbekistan’s efforts to advance social development, meet the Sustainable Development Goals, and bolster parliamentary diplomacy.
Ulugbek Lapasov, the Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the UN, emphasized that the document marks an important contribution by Uzbekistan to promote the global social agenda and enhance the role of parliaments in international affairs.
The resolution highlights the crucial role of parliaments in speeding up progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. It calls for better national laws, stronger social protection systems, poverty reduction, decent employment opportunities, wider access to quality education, and the promotion of social inclusion.
The document highlights the importance of boosting women’s and young people’s participation in parliamentary activities, utilizing digital transformation to promote social progress, and strengthening international cooperation to aid developing countries.
The document also mentions the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Tashkent and the adoption of the Tashkent Declaration on Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Social Justice.
The resolution urges UN member states to take a more active role in involving parliaments in implementing and overseeing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This includes preparing voluntary national reviews, monitoring the fulfillment of national commitments, and increasing engagement with civil society institutions.
The document also suggests increasing parliamentary participation in key UN events and strengthening national statistical systems to evaluate progress in social development better.
Prior to adopting the resolution, the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the UN conducted extensive political and diplomatic efforts.
The negotiation process involved formal consultations and multiple bilateral meetings. This approach enabled the creation of a balanced resolution that adheres to the principles of universality in UN documents and considers the interests of all member states.
