Due to coronavirus pandemic, the event was held without audience.
The flame was lit by Olympic Champions from Greece Katerina Stefanidis (pole vaulter) and Eleftherios Petrounis (gymnastics).
The event was held without spectators and journalists. It was planned to hold an event with participation of 55 actors in a stage show. The event was also expected to be attended by a new President of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
A welcome ceremony was held at the Matsushima base. Judoist Tadahiro Nomura and wrestler Saori Yoshida, both three-time Olympic champions, received the flame and used it to light a small cauldron.
