Agency for Urbanization under the Ministry of Economy and Industry of the Republic of Uzbekistan jointly with the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank, organized a workshop on studying the importance of sustainable urbanization in improving economic opportunities, in Tashkent.

It was attended by representatives of several ministries and agencies of Uzbekistan, international experts.

At the workshop, the Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sokhib Saifnazarov provided information on the activities carried out in the country by the ministry and agency in the field of stabilizing the level of urbanization and the plans in this direction.

“51 percent of the country’s population lives in cities, 49 percent in rural areas. By 2030, we are planning to bring the degree of urbanization to 60 percent. Special attention is paid to expansion of urban networks. In addition, a project is being carried out jointly with the World Bank, providing for the integration development of Kokand, Chartak and Yangiyul. Within the framework of this project, it is planned to transform Chartak into an eco-city, and Kokand into a transport hub. Together with the Asian Development Bank, a comprehensive program is being developed to develop the infrastructure of Yangiyer, Khiva and Jizzakh”, S. Saifnazarov says.

As it was noted, the ministry is preparing an investment program. Previously, such programs were designed for a year. The new program will cover a three-year period and provide for the development of engineering and communication infrastructures.

At the workshop, international experts familiarized participants with international best practices in city management.
