Tashkent to host third International Uzbek Cotton Fair
Third International Uzbek Cotton Fair and Fourth International Cotton and Textile Conference will be held on 17-19 September in Tashkent. The events are being organized by the government of Uzbekistan in cooperation with the International Cotton Advisory Committee and the Cotton Outlook magazine.
Uzbekistan celebrates 16th independence anniversary
Celebrations of the 16th anniversary of independence of Uzbekistan were held on 31 August at the National Park in Tashkent. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov participated in the celebrations and congratulated the people of Uzbekistan with the anniversary. The performance that followed demonstrated the country’s achievements during the years of independence.

President visits Shohidlar Khotirasi monument and Independence Square
President of Uzbekistan visited Shohidlar Khotirasi memorial complex in the early morning of Friday to honor the memory of victims of repressions. 31 August is annually celebrated in Uzbekistan as the Day of memory of repression victims.
Metro Group (Germany) opens representation in Tashkent
German company Metro Group opened its representation in Tashkent. Metro Group is one of the world’s largest companies dealing with trade of foodstuffs and consumer goods. Its trade network covers 30 countries.
Oliy Majlis, Cabinet of Ministers and President’s Office hold joint session
Joint session of the Oliy Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Cabinet of Ministers and the President’s Office devoted to the country’s 16th independence anniversary was held on 30 August. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov made a report on “Uzbekistan: 16 years of independent development” at the session.
Islam Karimov visits “Made in Uzbekistan” exhibition
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov visited “Made in Uzbekistan” exhibition held at UzExpoCenter in Tashkent on 30 August. The head of the state familiarized with automobile industry products presented at the exhibition, including those of UzDaewoo Auto company and Samarkand bus plant. The exhibition also featured agricultural, meat and dairy, textile and other products.
President of Uzbekistan meets deputy chairman of Turkmenistan’s Cabinet of Ministers
President Islam Karimov received deputy chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, foreign minister Rashid Meredov, who is on a visit to Uzbekistan, on 29 August. Welcoming the Turkmen official, President Karimov said his visit was a sign of developing relations between the two neighboring countries. The sides discussed issues of further strengthening bilateral relations and fuller use of the available potential.
International music festival “Sharq Taronalari” continues in Samarkand
Sixth international music festival “Sharq Taronalari” (“Oriental Melodies”) continues in Samarkand. Singers, musicians and dancers from 51 countries are participating in the event, which started on 27 August.
President familiarizes with new objects in Tashkent
President of UzbekistanIslam Karimov familiarized with newly constructed objects in the city of Tashkent on 28 August. The head of the state got acquainted with the new 2.2-km road linking the capital’s Yunusabad and Mirzo-Ulughbek districts. The construction of the road and the 16.5-m-high railway flyover started in February and was completed on 15 August.

Heads of foreign embassies in Uzbekistan laid flowers to the Monument of Independence and Humanism at the Independence Square in Tashkent on 28 August. The diplomats also familiarized with the Senate building located here and the work of the Uzbekistan Parliament’s upper chamber.
2750th anniversary celebrations of Samarkand held
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov participated in the celebrations of the 2750th anniversary of the city of Samarkand on Saturday. Officials, representatives of foreign embassies, international organizations, participants of the sixth international music festival Sharq Taronalari, tourists and others participated in the celebrations held at the city’s Registan square.
President participates in opening of Tashguzar-Baysun-Kumkurgan railway line
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov participated in the opening ceremony of the new railway line Tashguzar-Baysun-Kumkurgan on 24 August. The launch of the 223-km railway line will serve to socioeconomic development of the southern Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya regions and the country’s transport communications in general.

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a decree on 22 August 2007 on awarding the participants of construction of the 223-km-long Tashguzar-Baysun-Kumkurgan railway line.

Islam Karimov holds talks with Hu Jintao in Bishkek
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, who is in Bishkek to participate in the session of the Council of heads of states of the SCO, held talks with President of the People’s Republic of China Hu Jintao, and they discussed the state and perspectives of bilateral relations, as well as cooperation within the SCO. The leaders said the cooperation between Uzbekistan and China was developing in accordance with the Interstate friendship and partnership agreement signed in 2005.
President of Uzbekistan leaves for Bishkek
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov left for Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on 15 August. The head of the state will participate in the regular session of the council of heads of Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states.
Islam Karimov awarded with UNESCO medals
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov met participants of the international conference “Uzbekistan’s contribution to development of Islamic civilization” at Oqsaroy residence on 14 August. “Announcement of Tashkent the capital of Islamic culture in 2007 by ISESCO and organization of the large international forum have a great importance in familiarizing the world community with Uzbekistan and its culture and science,” the head of the state said.

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received President of the UNESCO General Conference Musa Bin Jaafar Bin Hassan at Oqsaroy residence in Tashkent on 14 August 2007. Islam Karimov expressed satisfaction with the development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and UNESCO.
