South Korean Prime Minister visits Kalmakir deposit of AGMK
Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea Han Seung-Soo, who is on an official visit to Uzbekistan, visited the Kalmakir deposit of the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex (AGMK) in Tashkent region on 11 May. Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev accompanied him on the visit. Han Seung-Soo familiarized himself with the activity of the complex, the production process and the working conditions.
Prime Minister of South Korea arrives in Uzbekistan
Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea Han Seung-Soo arrives in Uzbekistan on an official visit on 11 May. Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, welcomed the high-ranking guest at the Tashkent airport. During the visit, Han Seung-Soo is expected to hold talks with the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, as well as the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Senate. A forum with participation of representatives of business circles of the two countries is also planned.
President Islam Karimov receives head of Korean Air
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the chairman of the Korean Air Yang-Ho Cho on May 10 at the Oqsaroy residence in Tashkent. The Korean Air has been actively involved in the project to modernize the airport and organize the international logistics centre in the city of Navoi in Uzbekistan. During the talks at the Oqsaroy residence, the sides exchanged opinions on issues related to further development of cooperation between O‘zbekiston Havo Yo‘llari and Korean Air.
Uzbekistan Marks Memory and Honor Day
Uzbekistan celebrates the Day of Memory and Honor on 9 May. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov laid a wreath to the Monument of Grieving Mother in the center of Tashkent on this day. The head of the state rendered a tribute to the memory of thousands of compatriots who lost their lives during the World War II. “There is no family in Uzbekistan that was not affected by the war,” said Islam Karimov.

First solar power plants installed in Surkhandarya region

Tashkent-Non produces 500 tons of bread products per day

Commission for minors under Cabinet of Ministers holds session
The Commission for Minors under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan held a session at the General Prosecutor’s Office. 42th Mendeleyev Chemistry Olympiad ends in Tashkent
42th Mendeleyev International Chemistry Olympiad among schoolchildren ended in Tashkent on Sunday. Representatives of Uzbekistan won one gold, one silver and eight bronze medals, taking the first place in the team event. Teams from Uzbekistan, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Latvia, Estonia, Moldova, Romania and Bulgaria participated in the Olympiad.
Microfinancing problems considered at Legislative Chamber
The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan held a meeting on the implementation of the Law “On microfinancing” by commercial banks, credit associations, microcredit organizations and pawnshops. The meeting, organized by the Committee for budget and economic reforms of the Legislative Chamber, was attended by heads of relevant ministries and agencies, commercial banks and microfinance institutions.

Conference discusses development of seed production in Uzbekistan
A conference on problems of seed production in Uzbekistan was held by the Committee for agrarian, water and ecology issues of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis. Providing the agricultural sector with high-yield and high-quality seeds, conservation and efficient use of domestic and global gene pool, introduction of world experience, as well as improvement of the own seed base are a priority in development of agriculture in Uzbekistan, the forum participants said.
Mehr Nuri fund helps women entrepreneurs
In Uzbekistan, over 27,000 women are engaged in entrepreneurship, while more than 18,000 women work in farming. Organized in 2004, Mehr Nuri fund has been implementing a number of projects related to development of entrepreneurship among women. According to Jahongir Turahonov, project coordinator, each year, dozens of women are allocated grants for a family business.

Young reporters from the regions of Uzbekistan underwent training at a number of national publications, journalists were told at a press conference in Tashkent. The project was carried out by the Public fund for support and develop independent print media and news agencies of Uzbekistan.

On 3 May, the third International specialized exhibition and sale of mini technologies and compact equipment for agriculture “Uzbekistan Agrominitech Expo-2008” opened in Tashkent. About 70 companies from more than 20 countries including Uzbekistan, Russia, China, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands, Israel, Indonesia, South Korea, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, France, Czech Republic, Turkey and Iran offer their products and services at the exhibition.
