WorldFood Uzbekistan and AgroWorld Uzbekistan exhibitions open
Exhibitions WorldFood Uzbekistan 2008 and AgroWorld Uzbekistan 2008 opened in Tashkent on 25 March. The aim of the events is to attract foreign investments in the Uzbek food industry and agricultural sector. Among the participants are some 80 companies from more than 30 countries, including Uzbekistan, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Netherlands, Turkey, Poland, Israel, Malaysia and Singapore.
Young families in Uzbekistan provided with apartments
Two apartment houses were commissioned in Kokand, Ferghana region during the celebrations of the Navruz holiday. The houses were built specially for young families. A 32-apartment house was commissioned also in Tahiatash, Karakalpakstan. This year, more than 100 young families are expected to receive new housing in this northwestern region of Uzbekistan.
President of Uzbekistan visiting UAE
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov arrived on an official visit to Abu Dhabi on 17 March. At the talks with UAE President Sheikh Halifa Bin Zayed Al Nahayan, the two leaders discussed expansion of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UAE. Islam Karimov noted that the relations between the nations date back centuries. Uzbekistan considers the UAE its reliable partner in the Gulf, the head of the state said.

16 million people participate in hashar
More than 16 million people participated in the nationwide hashar (community work), held in Uzbekistan on 15-16 March. Over 10 million of that figure were young people.

Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan sign a number of documents
Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan signed a number of bilateral documents at the negotiations of the two countries’ official delegations in Tashkent on 10 March. Presidents Islam Karimov and Gubranguli Berdimuhamedov signed the joint Uzbek-Turkmen communiqué and the protocol on exchange of ratifications of the agreement on strengthening friendly relations between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, signed in Ashgabat on 18 October 2007.
Presidents of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan hold face-to-face talks
President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedov arrived in Uzbekistan with a state visit on 10 March. The official welcoming ceremony of the head of Turkmenistan was held at the Durmen residence. After the face-to-face talks, the two presidents participated in the expanded negotiations of the official delegations of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

Salaries in Uzbekistan to increase from 1 April
President of Uzbekistan signed a decree on 5 March 2008 on increasing the salaries, pensions, stipends and social allowances. According to the document, starting from 1 April salaries to employees of the state-financed institutions and organizations, as well as pensions, stipends and social allowances will be increased 1.12 times on the average.
Monument to poetess Zulfiya opened in Tashkent
On 1 March, a monument to famous poetess Zulfiya opened in the center of Tashkent. Heads of state and public organizations, poets and writers, relatives and others participated in the opening. Mayor of Tashkent A.Tukhtayev opened the solemn ceremony. The monument has been raised in accordance with the resolution of the President of Uzbekistan dated 13 September 2007. It was created by sculptor Ravshan Mirtojiyev.
President signs resolution on State Program “Year of Youth”
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a Resolution on State Program “Year of Youth” on 29 February 2008. The program approved by the resolution envisages a complex of measures for timely solution of problems in protection of interests and rights of the youth, deepening educational reforms, ensuring employment of graduates of educational establishments.
President of Uzbekistan completes visit to South Korea
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov made a visit to the Republic of Korea. On 26 February, Islam Karimov held talks with President of South Korea Lee Myung-bak. The two leaders discussed the current state and perspectives of bilateral relations, as well as regional and international issues.
Uzbek-German economic forum held in Tashkent
Economic forum of Uzbek and German business circiles was held in Tashkent on 26 February. Minister of foreign economic relations, investments and trade of Uzbekistan Elyor Ganiyev and Federal minister of economics and technology of Germany Michael Glos participated in the forum.
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov visiting South Korea
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov is on a visit to the Republic of Korea. On Monday, Islam Karimov participated in the ceremony of inauguration of the newly elected President of the Repubilc of Korea Lee Myung-bak. The Grand National Party candidate Lee Myung-bak won the presidential elections on 19 December 2007. He is the first representative of business elected to the highest state post in South Korea.
President Karimov signs decree on awarding Russian President Putin with order
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a decree on 20 February on awarding Russian President Vladimir Putin with the order “Buyuk Khizmatlari Uchun” (“For Great Achievements”).

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov left for Seoul on 24 February to participate in the ceremony of the inauguration of the President of the Republic of Korea.
Informal CIS summit held in Moscow
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov participated in the informal summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States in Moscow on 22 February. The main issue on the agenda was implementation of the Concept of CIS development adopted in October 2007 in Dushanbe. The heads of states exchanged views on important issues of CIS development and integration processes.
