New governor of Tashkent region appointed
The extraordinary session of the Tashkent regional council of people’s deputies was held on 16 December. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov participated in the session. The head of the state proposed relieving the acting regional hokim (governor) Ziyavitdin Niyazov of his duties and appointing Rustam Holmatov to the post of the governor of Tashkent region.
Session of Navoi regional council held
On 12 December, the extraordinary session of the Navoi regional council of people’s deputies was held. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov made a speech at the session. The head of the state said that Navoi region and Navoi city occupied a special place in the country’s development. The region’s industrial enterprises export their products to 54 states.
10 December is day of adoption of state anthem
On 10 December 1992, the law on the state anthem of Uzbekistan was adopted, which approved the text and the music of the state anthem.
Plenary session of Senate completes
The Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan continued its 16th plenary session on 5 December. The members of the parliament’s upper chamber started the second day of the plenary with consideration of documents related to the country’s international cooperation. In all, during its two-day session, the Senate considered a total of 24 issues, the Senate press service said.
2009 proclaimed Year of rural development
The solemn meeting devoted to the 16th anniversary of the Constitution of Uzbekistan was held on 5 December at the Turkiston Palace in Tashkent. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov made a speech at the meeting. The head of the state noted that Constitution was the main basis of the huge creative work and large-scale reforms held in the country in the years of independence.
High awards presented to citizens

The 16th plenary session of the Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan opened on 4 December in Tashkent. Senate chairman Ilgizar Sobirov chaired the session, the press service of the parliament’s upper chamber said. The senators started their work with consideration of the state budget for 2009.

Legislative Chamber approves changes in military service law
The law on introducing changes in articles 18 and 19 of the law on military service was developed in accordance with the November decree of the President.
Senate Committee considers budget for 2009
On 26 November, the Senate’s Commitee for budget and economic reforms held a session to discuss the main macroeconomic parameters and the state budget for 2009. The senators said the main directions of the tax and budget policy for the coming year are further strengthening of the macroeconomic stability and creation of the favorable conditions for development of the economic entities.
Legislative Chamber holds session
The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan held a session on 25 November to consider the implementation of the state budget in the nine months of 2008 and other issues. Deputy finance minister M.Mirzayev presented the report on the budget implementation, and the head of the Committee for budget and economic reforms A.Ahadov made a co-report.
President receives outgoing Russian ambassador
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the ambassador of Russia Farit Muhametshin, who is completing his diplomatic mission to the country, on 25 November. The head of the state highly evaluated the activity of the ambassador in Uzbekistan and wished him success in his future work.
Head of OPEC Fund visits Uzbekistan
Director general of the OPEC Fund for international development Suleyman Al Herbish visited Uzbekistan and held talks on cooperation with the country.

Hungarian Foreign minister holds talks in Tashkent
Foreign minister of Hungary King Mrs Qinga Goents is on a visit in Uzbekistan. On 19 November, she met the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Dilorom Tashmuhamedova.
Uzbekistan-Malaysia: new stage of cooperation
The Prime minister of Malaysia Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi arrived with an official visit to Uzbekistan on 16 November. On the following day, President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov and Malaysian Prime minister held face-to-face talks. They considered issues of development of bilateral political relations, expansion of economic and humanitarian cooperation, as well as regional and international issues.
