President of Latvia to visit Uzbekistan
President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers will pay a state visit to Uzbekistan on 5-7 October on the invitation of the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov. During the visit, issues of expansion of Uzbek-Latvian cooperation, as well as important problems of regional and international character will be considered.
President familiarizes with reforms in rural areas
President Islam Karimov visited Tashkent region on 2 October to familiarize himself with the socioeconomic reforms and changes in the agricultural sector. The visit of the head of the state started with familiarization with the activities of a farm headed by Doniyar Rasulov in Yuqori-Chirchik district, which specializes in grain and cotton growing.
Cabinet of Ministers discusses 2009 budget
The Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan held a session on 30 September to consider the forecast of macroeconomic indicators, main directions of tax and budget policy and the draft state budget for 2009.
Interior ministry, OSCE coordinator organize round table
The round table on the interaction of the internal affairs bodies with other law enforcement and government agencies and non-governmental organizations to protect the rights and freedoms of the citizens was organized in Tashkent by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the coordinator of OSCE projects.
Meeting of Cabinet’s commission for minors held
The meeting of the Commission for Minors under the Cabinet of Ministers was held at the public Prosecutor’s Office of Uzbekistan. Its participants discussed issues of education of students in Andijan, Ferghana and Namangan region on the basis of modern requirements, improving the knowledge and physical training of difficult and failing children by engaging them in sports and other activities.
Observance of human rights by law enforcement bodies considered
The session of the interdepartmental working group on examining observance by the law enforcement authorities of the human rights was held at the Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan.
Legislative Chamber considers new laws
The Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan held a session on 23 September. The session was chaired by the chamber speaker Dilorom Tashmuhamedova. The chairman of the Committee for labor and social issues I.Nasriyev presented a report on the committee’s activity in 2005-2007 and in the first half of 2008. He said the committee had conducted a large work to strengthen the legal base of social protection of the population.
Discussion of Draft National Actions Plan on realization of ILO Conventions on Minimum Age for Admission to Employment and Prohibition and Immediate Action for Elimination of Worst Forms of Child Labour
On 10 July, 2008, in the city of Tashkent, the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan held a round table on adoption of the Draft National Actions’ Plan on realization of the ILO Conventions No. 138 The Minimum Age for Admission to Employment and No. 182 The Prohibition and Immediate Action for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour.
Monument to Navoi opens in Baku

Senate to hold 15th plenary session
The Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan will hold its 15th plenary session on 28-29 August in Tashkent. The senators are expected to consider a total of over 20 issues, including more than 10 laws, as well as other issues within the Senate’s competence.
