President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov left for Russia on an official visit on 5 February. At the talks in Moscow, the sides are expected to discuss the state and perspectives of Uzbek-Russian relations, cooperation in security, as well as regional and international problems representing mutual interest.
President of Uzbekistan to visit Russia on 5-6 February
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov will pay a state visit to the Russian Federation on 5-6 February on the invitation of this country’s President Vladimir Putin. During the visit, the sides are expected to consider the state and perspectives of bilateral relations, as well as important regional and international issues and cooperation within international organizations.

President receives Commander of US Central Command
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the Admiral William J. Fallon, the Commander of the U.S. Central Command on 24 January at Oqsaroy residence in Tashkent. President visits exhibition on housing conditions for military
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov visited the exhibition devoted to the conditions of the military service on 18 January. The exhibition was organized by the Defense Ministry of Uzbekistan. The head of the state familiarized himself with the mobile complex of material and technical provision of the military, including samples of 60-person mobile catering stations, showers and container refrigerators.

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the European Union’s Special Representative for Central Asia Pierre Morel on 17 January in Tashkent. The President said he respected Pierre Morel as a person who had made a significant contribution to the development of cooperation between the EU and the Central Asian states, in particular, Uzbekistan.

Swearing-in ceremony of the President of Uzbekistan was held on 16 January at the joint session of the Legislative Chamber and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis in Tashkent. EU welcomes abolition of death penalty in Uzbekistan
The EU welcomed the abolition of the death penalty in Uzbekistan on 1 January 2008. “We congratulate the Uzbek government and the Uzbek people on this important decision and the EU encourages the Uzbek government to fully implement it and carry out further reforms of the judicial system,” the Slovenian Presidency on behalf of the EU stated in its Declaration on 3 January.

Islam Karimov receives 88.1% votes at presidential elections
According to preliminary results of the elections of the President of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov received 88.1% of the votes. This was announced by the chairman of the Central Election Commission Mirzo-Ulugbek Abdusalomov at the briefing for journalists in Tashkent on Monday evening. In all, 13,008,357 people cast their votes for Islam Karimov.
