UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth visits IUT

On 11 June 2018, UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth Jayathma Wickramanayake visited Inha University in Tashkent (IUT).

It should be noted that Ms. Wickramanayake arrived in Uzbekistan to participate in an international conference “The role of youth in preventing and countering violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism”.

According to Inha University in Tashkent, during the visit to IUT, the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth met with participants of the 2018 Technovation Uzbekistan contest.

During the meeting, Jayathma Wickramanayake shared information about her activities as the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth affairs and work with the youth in Sri Lanka.

She got acquainted with the Technovation Uzbekistan contest and the work of the girls, which they presented within the project.

Jayathma Wickramanayake was impressed with the mobile applications, developed by the girls and wished them good luck. She stressed that the number of girls in STEM is very small and through participation in such projects they create a new history.

Jayathma Wickramanayake was appointed the United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth in June 2017, by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. In this role, she works to expand the engagement, participation and advocacy efforts of youth across the four main pillars of the work of the United Nations: development, human rights, peace and security and humanitarian action.
